HEATHER MILLER earned her Master of Social Work at the University of Toronto in 2003 and holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a double major in English and Indigenous Studies from Trent University. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 20, Heather is passionate about combining her lived experience with a professional background in program development and facilitation to support youth in the diabetes community. As Executive Director at Diabetes Hope Foundation, she has worked with youth leaders to expand the programs and resources available to support youth with T1D through their transition to post-secondary school.
Heather lives in Toronto, Canada, and is a mom of three avid reader. She loves bedtime when she and her daughter either read stories together (Robert Munsch is a favourite!) or they make up their own ‘dream stories’. Heather has always loved writing and is a member of a monthly writing circle where enjoys taking moments from her day to day life and growing them into rich stories with dynamic characters. Heather was honoured to help craft Abbi’s story for Sweet Steps and is excited to share it and raise awareness about type 1 diabetes and the importance of support for youth living with the chronic illness.
