Megan holds a PhD in English Literature from McMaster University. Her research focuses on education systems in fantasy fiction, looking at how magic is taught and what social and cultural lessons come along with the intentional instruction in magic. Her book Schools of Magic: Learning in Children’s and Young Adult Fantasy Fiction looks at standardized testing in Harry Potter, financial status in Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicles, colonialism in Lev Grossman’s Magicians trilogy, and gendered care-work in the Tiffany Aching books of Terry Pratchett’s expansive Discworld series. Nowadays, she runs The Bard and Bear Games Café in Hamilton, Ontario with her husband Steven – which means that she reads for fun and plays for work, which is a pretty sweet deal, if you ask her.
