Jon-Erik Lappano’s debut picture book, Tokyo Digs a Garden, illustrated by Kellen Hatanaka, won the Governor General’s Literary Award and was a finalist for several others. In his latest picture book, we meet Martin, who loves to play by the river near his house. Join Jon-Erik for an interactive workshop where participants will be guided through a creative writing exercise to describe their favourite places to find and connect with nature. We’ll be learning to use descriptive, poetic language to paint vibrant pictures of the places we feel most at home. Afterward, we’ll use art to create a picture that accompanies our writing, to tell a full story.
This workshop will be most enjoyed by kids aged 8-12, even though the book is geared to younger readers. All materials will be supplied. Just bring your imagination. Purchase a copy of Martin and the River at Different Drummer Books, and Jon-Erik will sign it prior to the session, at the nearby Autograph Tent, beginning at 11:15AM.
